Agency: Razorfish
Client: Kraft Macaroni & Cheese
This was the first site we did for the brand. The whole idea was to resurrect Mac and Cheese main character Cheesasaurus Rex – or C.Rex for friends– and make a fun site where kids could go at anytime and interact with him. Also, we needed to create a space to advertise different promotions throughout the year.
Since there were new TV spots using 3D animation, we thought of incorporating a 3D version of C.Rex on the landing page. We somehow had to transmit what the character was all about, and if there's something CRex likes is to get "cheesed".
So the idea was simple: C.Rex and a big yellow button, that the user had to push to get him cheesed. But how would the user know what to do? C.Rex should have different ways to let them know, such as pointing at the button, knodding, knocking at the screen, displaying a sign, or rocking impatiently. But, if the user took a long time to deliver the cheese CRex would have to do it himself.
First I sketched all the storyboards for the different animations, for the client and the animation studio. I also had to prepare all the assets to be internet friendly. Once we had all the video assets ready, I scripted the looping sequence in Flash, allowing the video clips to play randomly and seamlessly. I divided the clips into groups based on the level of "anxiety" shown by the character, so the videos could be displayed in a progressive order. My script also contains a timer that reads user interaction. If the user is innactive, the clip of C.Rex pressing the yellow button will be triggered, and the loop will restart. Finally, I incorporated the sound effects.
